FOXBORO, Mass. — Two years after losing out to the Redskins on the Albert Haynesworth sweepstakes, the Buccaneers finally got their guy.
The problem will be getting him to play up to his potential, and that won't be any small feat for the Bucs, who claimed Haynesworth off waivers, according to multiple reports. Haynesworth, of course, was released by the Patriots due to his inconsistencies and lack of desire to maximize his talent, which is clearly still in place. His desire was the question.
Because Haynesworth was claimed off waivers, the Patriots are off the hook for the rest of his salary.
Haynesworth signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Redskins in 2009, and he actually turned down more money from Tampa Bay because they didn't play in a big enough market. Now that Haynesworth has no choice but to play for the Buccaneers — for far less money, no less — it could get pretty tricky for head coach Raheem Morris.
The Bucs have a need at the position after placing Gerald McCoy, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, on injured reserve.
