The undisputed best team in the world made it official Sunday. FC Barcelona became FIFA Club World Cup champions by defeating Brazilian club Santos 4-0 in Sunday’s final, according to the Associated Press.
“The reason for our success is the effort of the players,” Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola said. “We have very high-quality players and were able to display quality football. I am honored to work with these great players.”
Lionel Messi scored goals in each half en route to capturing player of the tournament honors. Cesc Fabregas and Xavi also scored in the rout over the South American club champions.
“I’m excited about winning this title because we wanted to become the best in the world,” Messi said. “I’m happy about my goals but, more than that, I am happy with the performance of the team.”
The championship was Barcelona’s second in the last three years. It won the 2009 tournament over Argentine club Estudiantes. It is the 13th major trophy the club has won since Guariola became manager in 2008.
The FIFA Club World Cup is a tournament between the six continental champions. It also includes the league champions of the host country.
