Vote: Will Jason Varitek Be a Member of the Red Sox This Season?

Jason Varitek may yet return to the Red Sox, but the chances appear slight.

Varitek was reportedly offered a non-roster invitation to spring training, putting the veteran catcher in contention for a job with Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Kelly Shoppach and Ryan Lavarnway.

If he doesn’t make the team in Boston, Varitek would have to shop his services to another elsewhere. The demand in the free-agent market for a 39-year-old catcher is likely to be tepid at best.

The Red Sox have said they hope Varitek can be with the team long-term in a non-playing capacity. He would probably make an excellent minor-league catching instructor, if he feels like relocating to Salem, Va., or Portland, Maine. He may also be a welcome addition to the front office at 4 Yawkey Way.

This could be the end of the playing career for the catcher who was behind the plate for four no-hitters, but Varitek may still have something to contribute at Fenway Park.

Where will Jason Varitek be next season?
