Man Receives First Sentence for Vancouver Stanley Cup Riots, Gets 17 Months in Prison

Sentencing was handed down to the first man convicted of participating in the riots in downtown Vancouver after the Stanley Cup Finals last June.

Ryan Dickinson was given 17-months in prison after it was discovered that the 20-year-old man was seen throwing a newspaper box at two police cars and through a store window, according to The Globe and Mail.

Pleading guilty to one count of participating in the riot and another for violating a court ordered curfew, Dickinson claims he was "caught up in the moment," after the Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins in Game 7.

Neil MacKenzie, spokesman for the Criminal Justice Branch of the Crown, said that the sentencing will factor into other riot cases, but the courts will look at the circumstances surrounding each individual occurrence.
