As teams prepare for the start of spring training and players begin to report for duty, Johnny Damon remains a free agent looking for a place to play.
Damon found success with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011, but it appears the 38-year-old outfielder turned designated-hitter still has a soft spot for the New York Yankees. Damon played for the Yankees from 2006 to 2009 and was a popular player, even up until his last days in the big apple. Now it appears that Damons is hoping for a return trip to the big city.
In an interview with CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Damon explained that he believes he's a great match for the Yankees and that he's not sure why they haven't called about signing him.
"I think it's a perfect fit,'' Damon said of the Yankees. "But for some reason you have the year I had, especially with a team that has trouble scoring, and you can't even get a call to continue playing."
Last season with the Rays, Damon hit .261 with 16 homers and 73 RBI in 150 games. Over the course of his career, he is a .286 hitter and has smacked 231 home runs with 1120 RBI.
Aside from playing in Tampa and New York, Damon also played four seasons in Boston and was part of the Red Sox historic 2004 World Series team.
