Will Rajon Rondo Be Suspended for Flipping Ball Off Referee During Loss to Pistons?

Things went from bad to worse for the Celtics on Sunday.

Not only did the C’s drop their third straight to the lowly Pistons, but Rajon Rondo was ejected for throwing the ball at referee Sean Wright following a no-call.

It wasn’t an extremely forceful throw, and you could argue that a foul should have been called on the play, during which Rondo got leveled on his way to the basket and ended up on the floor. But intentionally throwing the ball at a ref could warrant supplemental discipline.

Rondo received a double technical, and was forced to miss the rest of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter as a result of the automatic ejection. But is that enough?

Even if Rondo does escape a suspension or fine, expect the league to at least take a look at the incident.

If Rondo is forced to miss any time beyond Sunday’s game, it would be a huge blow, as the Celtics are already dealing with some injury issues. Kevin Garnett missed Sunday’s game and Brandon Bass, a key component of the bench, remains out with a knee injury.

With the wheels slowly coming off for the Celtics, who are sitting at 15-15 and behind the Philadelphia 76ers in the Atlantic Division, they can ill afford to lose their best player.
