The desert heat won a battle against common sense on Sunday, but the United Arab Emirates Football Association made sure good sense won the war on Monday.
The Associated Press reports, Al Wasl goalkeeper Majid Naser faces a 17-game ban for slapping Al Alhi manager Quique Sanchez Flores.
The incident took place following Al Wasl 1-0 loss to Al Alhi in a testy Etisalat Cup semifinal game. Sanchez Flores was celebrating the victory with his team, when Naser slapped him in the back of the head … hard.
It nearly led to a brawl, before the tensions cooled down. Al Wasl suspended Naser indefinitely immediately after the game. The UAE FA banned and fined him $8,167.
“This type of behavior not only damages the reputation of the individual but is also detrimental to the image of the club,” Al Wasl said in a statement.
On the field, most sports teams reflect the personality and ideals of their coaches. So what does it say about Al Wasl manager Diego Maradona when his goalkeeper slaps the opposing team’s manager?
