Bobby Valentine appears optimistic about this year's Red Sox team. And why shouldn't he be? Boston's roster still boasts some of the MLB's best players and the Red Sox were within just a few late September meltdowns of a late October playoff run.
This season hasn't gotten off to the best start for the Red Sox, though. Last year's major free-agent signing Carl Crawford remains on the disabled list to start the season, and the starting left fielder isn't expected back until late April at the earliest.
Then, of course, there's the recent news of closer Andrew Bailey's thumb injury and his anticipated absence from the team for 3-4 months. Alfredo Aceves, who more than proved his value to the Red Sox late last season, will get the nod to finish off games in Bailey's place. But without having much experience at the back end of a bullpen, Aceves is still a major wild card.
Injuries will certainly have a serious impact on the Red Sox roster, and they could have implications on the team's outcome once September rolls around.
Adrian Gonzalez is expected to put on another MVP-caliber season, and Dustin Pedroia will be looked to for both consistency at the plate and leadership in the clubhouse. Then of course there's Jacoby Ellsbury, who will try to improve upon last season's second-place finish in the MVP voting, while David Ortiz looks to prove his value and earn another big contract in the big leagues.
There will be plenty of highs and probably a number of lows for the Red Sox in 2012. But with so much talent and promise on the roster, where do you think the Red Sox will finish this season?
