BOSTON –– In an ironic twist, the Red Sox designated Brent Lillibridge for assignment on the day of Kevin Youkilis' return.
Acquired from the White Sox in exchange for Youkilis on June 24, Lillibridge hoped to bolster Boston with his versatility. Throughout his career, the utilityman has played every position in the field, except pitcher and catcher.
With Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford on the mend –– and the latter activated before Monday's game against the White Sox –– Lillibridge became expendable and won't have the chance to face his former team.
"During the time that we had him, he was available to do all those things," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said of Lillibridge's versatility. "Now that it seems Ells is back and ready to go, it just seemed like he could do what we wanted him to do, but it's a thing that we need the least right now."
In 10 games for the Red Sox, Lillibridge collected two hits and tallied a .125 batting average.
