James Loney Hits Fifth in Red Sox Debut, While David Ortiz Sits Out Another Day

Adrian Gonzalez wasted no time getting used to his new home with the Dodgers.

He smashed a three-run homer in his first at-bat just hours after he and fellow former Red Sox teammates Josh Beckett and Nick Punto arrived in Los Angeles.

On Saturday, Gonzalez's counterpart in the trade, former Dodgers first baseman James Loney, will get a chance to impress his new club.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine penciled Loney into the No. 5 hole for Boston as the Red Sox prepare for their third of four games against the Kansas City Royals. A career .284 hitter, Loney played in just 114 games for the Dodgers this year and batted .254.

Elsewhere in the lineup, David Ortiz misses his second straight game with an aggravation of the Achilles injury that sidelined him for well over a month. He played well in Friday night's win, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, but his foot is giving him enough trouble that the Sox may have to sit him for a while.

Boston is 13-23 without Ortiz in the lineup since his injury, and the fill-ins at the designated hitter position haven't hit any home runs.
