Aldon Smith Was Involved in ‘Serious Car Accident’ Days Before Sacking Matthew Stafford, Helping 49ers Win

Aldon Smith
just seems to be a magnet for trouble, even when he's not looking for it.

After a rookie season that saw Smith rack up 45 tackles, 16 sacks and a second-place finish in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, the 49ers fierce pass rusher has found himself in one interesting situation after another.

On Friday night, Smith was involved in a serious car crash that saw the driver taken away in an ambulance with what was determined as a "broken back," according to Matthew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Smith was a passenger in the car as it swerved in an attempt to avoid a deer on a road in Santa Clara, Calif. County on Friday night. The vehicle ended up on its side in a dirt embankment.

While the driver was taken to the San Jose Regional Medical Center, Smith was transported to Stanford Hospital, the 49ers' team facility, where he was treated for a cut suffered above his right eye. Smith needed stitches to close the cut, but it wasn't enough to keep him from Sunday night's game against the Lions.

The stitched-up Smith went on to have a major impact in the game, playing in every defensive snap while recording five tackles and a sack as the 49ers pulled out the 27-19 win.

In January, Smith was charged with a DUI while driving along Miami Beach. Then in June, the 22-year-old suffered minor stab wounds during a party at his own house.

What do you think?  Leave a comment.

Maybe Smith should take up more tame extra-curriculars, like sewing or croquet. Or, maybe the 49ers just wrap the massive defensive end in bubble wrap, as Pro Football Talk's Darin Gantt suggests. He would probably be a whole lot safer that way.
