The Danish soccer player scored a goal on Saturday that may be considered the “greatest-ever goal scored by a goalkeeper.”
Kohler, 24, plays for Danish second division club Frem, but he’s shot to fame with a goal that would make any field player beam with pride.
It came in the dying seconds of a leage game against Skjold Birkerod. Down 1-0, Frem had a corner kick, and its goalkeeper, Kohler, ran forward to participate in the action as those in his position often do near the end of a game.
But what Kohler did was anything but ordinary. He missed the corner kick, but a clearance fell to a teammate who lofted a cross back into the area.
Kohler rose and hit an acrobatic, overhead kick with perfect timing and accuracy. He was rewarded with a goal and celebrated with a flip that proved his soccer technique was no fluke.
Kohler and Swiss goalkeeper Dominique Niederhauser are now running neck-and-neck to see which goal will go down as the best ever scored by a goalkeeper. That debate will rage on, but one thing is clear: there’s a lot of action in the lower leagues and, thankfully, there are cameraphones to capture it all.
