Doug Fister Breaks AL Consecutive Strikeouts Record, Mows Down Nine Straight Royals (Video)

If you were to guess which Tigers pitcher would break the American League record for most consecutive strikeouts in a game, who would it be?

Most likely, everyone would say Justin Verlander.

For the trivia buffs out there, take out your notepads.

On Thursday afternoon against the Royals, Doug Fister K'ed the entire Kansas City lineup in a row, from the fourth through seventh innings. In doing so, he broke the long-standing AL record of eight, held by the likes of Nolan Ryan (who did it twice), Roger Clemens, Blake Stein and Ron Davis.

Had Fister been able to ring up a 10th consecutive Royal, he would have tied Tom Seaver for the MLB record. Instead, shortstop Salvador Perez grounded out to end the streak.
