49ers Quarterback Alex Smith Throws Out First Pitch at Reds-Giants NLDS Opener, Doesn’t Get Fined

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith is very good at throwing a football. On Saturday, however, it was a baseball he was tossing.

Smith has been known to show support for the city's baseball team, sporting a Giants hat during press conferences — that is, until the NFL threatened him with a $15,000 fine.

Smith was allowed to wear his Giants hat without penalty Saturday night when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the National League Division Series between San Francisco and Cincinnati.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy, a supporter of Smith during the hat situation, may have had something to do with who would take the mound before Matt Cain came out to pitch.

Maybe Smith can work out a deal where Bochy can be a part of the coin flip at an upcoming 49ers game.
