Report: Craig Counsell Withdraws Name From Consideration for Red Sox Hitting Coach

Craig Counsell will not be Boston’s next hitting coach.

The former infielder reportedly withdrew from consideration for the Red Sox’ open position Monday, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, after interviewing with Boston’s brass last week.

With Counsell out of the mix, Red Sox minor league hitting coordinator Victor Rodriguez, Yankees minor league hitting coach Greg Colbrunn, Diamondbacks hitting coach Rick Schu and Braves assistant hitting coach Scott Fletcher are the final candidates for the job.

Counsell, 42, played 16 seasons in the majors for the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Marlins, Rockies and Dodgers and finished with a .255 batting average in 1,624 career games. He retired after the 2011 season and will continue to serve as a special adviser to Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.
