Since character is such a major part of NFL draft evaluations, you would have to assume that lying about a girlfriend could affect draft status.
The Manti Te’o reports regarding his girlfriend will have a “major impact” on his draft grade, according to Tony Pauline of SI.com.
Deadspin released a report saying the girlfriend of Te’o, who was originally reported to have died in September, was a hoax. Te’o has since released a statement that he was not part of the hoax, though he had said in the past that he had talked to the girl on the phone and that he had met her in person.
Regardless of whether Te’o was using his fake girlfriend’s death as a publicity stunt, or whether he had simply lied about certain aspects of their relationship would still reveal certain character flaws to the NFL. Te’o had been looked at as a surefire first-round prospect with some analysts mocking him as early as the No. 1 overall pick.
