After the Atlanta Braves’ proposed new batting-practice cap drew considerable backlash for its inappropriate portrayal of Native Americans, the team has announced its decision to scrap the controversial design.
The team will instead wear blue caps closely resembling their game caps, featuring a red letter “A” outlined in white.
Braves president John Schuerholz insisted that the so-called “screaming Indian” design, which was first reported on by Uni Watch in late December, was only one of several options in consideration, and that the team is pleased with their decision to return to the “script A.”
“I like the selection we made this year,” Schuerholz told MLB.com. “We had a variety of choices that we looked at, some more thoroughly than others. But at the end, we liked this one. … When we made our decisions, we tried to contemplate. We tried to be creative. We tried to carry on the theme of our organization, and we think this script A does that. It is part of the continuum of the uniform look we have.”
Atlanta — as with all MLB teams — will debut its new batting-practice caps during Spring Training.
