New York announced that they have cut linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace, tackle Jason Smith, safety Eric Smith and tight end Josh Baker. The cost-saving moves freed up $31.265 million, according to NYJetsCap.com’s figures.
The Jets’s 2013 total cap value now sits at $119.15 million, which is roughly $2.5 million under the $121.5 cap. The Jets could save another $3.8 million by cutting defensive tackle Sione Pouha and $1 million by cutting Tim Tebow. Unfortunately for the Jets, cutting Mark Sanchez would count $4.3 million against the cap.
Pace and Scott were both starters in the Jets’ base 3-4 defense. That means New York will be looking for a couple starting linebackers in free agency and the 2013 NFL draft.
