Jordany Valdespin Vows to Wear Protective Cup, But Not Before Incident Leads to ‘Numbnuts!’ Headline (Photo)

One of the biggest daily decisions a baseball player has to make comes long before a game’s first pitch. Jordany Valdespin made the wrong choice on Monday.

Valdespin was drilled with a 94-mph fastball by Tigers ace Justin Verlander. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Valdespin was plunked in a rather sensitive male area, and he wasn’t wearing a protective cup to boot.

As you’d expect, that meant a rather painful lesson for Valdespin.

“I never use a cup, but I’ve got to because I’m really scared of the ball hitting me in the balls,” Valdespin said, according to the New York Post’s Mike Puma.

Despite learning his lesson, Valdespin wasn’t let off the hook easy. Not only did Mets manager Terry Collins question why he wasn’t wearing a cup in the first place, but the New York Post used the incident as an opportunity to drop a pretty hilarious headline.
