After footage of Rice physically and verbally abusing his players aired on ESPN, the school dismissed him on Wednesday, but he won’t be walking away empty-handed. For lasting the entire season, Rice will earn a $100,000 bonus as stipulated by his contract.
According to Rutgers athletic department spokesman, Jason Baum, the bonus will be paid because it is contractually obligated.
Rice earned $622,500 in 2012 and also received bonuses for graduating players and winning games. The $100,000 payout is part of his five-year contract that simply called for him to complete the 2012-2013 season.
Rice would not be collecting the big bucks if he had been fired back in December when he was fined $50,000 and suspended without pay for three weeks when the practice tapes were first seen by the university.
