Report: Head Coach Doug Collins Informs Sixers He Won’t Return After Season

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doug Collins has informed the team’s management that he won’t return to finish out the last year of his contract next season.

Per Yahoo! Sports, Collins will resign at the end of the 2013 season. While it seems to be the end of coaching on the sidelines for Collins, it’s possible that he could return to the team in a front office capacity.

Staying for the final season of his contract would have paid Collins $4.5 million, but he informed management of his decision to leave in the last few days. The 76ers have a 33-47 record this season and are ninth place in the East.

Collins’ NBA coaching career has included stops in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and Washington. Collins’ son Chris was recently hired as the head coach at Northwestern University.
