Patriots Waive Wide Receiver Andre Holmes, Cutting Roster to 88 Players

After taking two wide receivers in the 2013 NFL draft and signing two more as undrafted free agents, the Patriots are cutting ties with a veteran.

New England waived Andre Holmes on Saturday, according to the league’s transaction wire. Holmes spent time on the Patriots’ practice squad in January 2013.

Holmes was a long shot to make the Patriots roster after the team drafted Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce in the second and fourth rounds, respectively. Holmes went undrafted out of Division II Hillsdale College in 2011 before being signed by the Vikings as a rookie free agent.

The move leaves 88 players on the New England roster. The roster limit is 90 players. The team recently worked out guards Antoine Caldwell, Rex Hadnot and Tyronne Green and running back Felix Jones. They each left Foxboro without a contract.
