NHL Competition Committee Recommends Mandatory Visors, Hybrid Icing Among Changes for 2013-14 Season

The NHL is thinking about making some changes.

The league’s competition committee recommended on Tuesday several rules changes, with the most notable one being that visors would be mandatory for all players beginning for the 2013-14 season. Of course, just as the league did when making helmets necessary, current players have the option of not wearing one “grandfathered” in.

Another big change the committee suggested was to institute hybrid icing during preseason games, with the possibility of even instituting the rule for regular-season play if things go well.

The league also will also make all high-sticking double-minor penalties subject to review and is looking into making the nets shallower by four inches to allow increased play behind the goal.

All of the changes must still be approved by the NHL’s Board of Governors, which is set to meet in late June.
