Jerry Seinfeld Says ‘American League Is Not the Taliban,’ Rips Crowd for Booing During All-Star Game
Fans booing rival sports teams is nothing new, but comedian Jerry Seinfeld found the behavior of his fellow Mets fans during the All-Star Game at Citi Field to be “embarrassing,” nonetheless.
Seinfeld said in an interview with WFAN radio that he was upset that fans were booing players from the American League and other rivals of the Mets.
“This is one of the lowest moments of my lifetime of Mets fandom, when the Citi Field crowd was booing [players] that they see as rivals to their Mets team,” Seinfeld said. “And I’m standing there, I was in shock. I was embarrassed. I thought it was horrible manners.”
One of those rivals who was booed was Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee, and he didn’t seem very happy about it. Seinfeld found this sort of behavior to be childish.
“These are the best players, in the game you love, that have come here to put on a show for you, and we’re booing them like 5-year-olds,” Seinfeld said. “As if there’s some sort of real animosity.”
“The American League is not the Taliban. What are we booing Miguel Cabrera [for]? … So I was very embarrassed by that.”
Seinfeld was happy, though, with the reception that Mets fans gave Yankees closer Mariano Rivera when he came on to pitch in his final All-Star Game.
