It’s been that kind of season for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jose Reyes — one of the Jays’ most consistent batters over the last month, having hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games — made it through just an inning and a half of Wednesday night’s division tilt against the Yankees.
Batting with two outs in the top of the second, Reyes was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Ted Barrett. The shortstop clearly disagreed with the call, launching into an animated protest and throwing his bat aside before storming off toward the mound, seemingly ending the altercation. Reyes then removed his helmet and tossed it back in Barrett’s direction, though, and the umpire promptly ejected him from the game.
The helmet never touched Barrett, but it was obvious that any further argument on Reyes’ part would result in an early shower.
