CBSSports.com reports the Yankees have signed veteran corner infielder Mark Reynolds. The 30-year-old was designated for assignment by the Indians last week.
Reynolds is hitting just .215 this season with an eye-popping 123 strikeouts in just 335 at-bats. While his tendency to strike out a ton is well known, Reynolds does have the ability to drive the baseball. He has 15 home runs in just 99 games this season, and he’s just four short of 200 for his career. Reynolds averaged 35 home runs per season in a four-year stretch from 2008 through 2011 in time with Arizona and Baltimore.
The Yankees are likely hoping Reynolds can give them another source of power down the stretch. It probably doesn’t hurt that the veteran has hit 10 home runs and driven in 29 runs in his last 38 games against the Red Sox. New York and Boston play 10 more times this season beginning with a three-game series starting Friday at Fenway Park.
