Suzyn Waldman Claims to See ‘Lot of People Standing and Cheering’ for Alex Rodriguez’s First At-Bat (Audio)

Aug 6, 2013

Alex RodriguezIt is certainly no secret that Yankees radio broadcaster Suzyn Waldman sees things through a Yankees-colored light to the point that she probably wears pinstriped pajamas. But she found a new way to prove that sometimes, at least, she just doesn’t see all of reality.

Waldman and longtime radio partner John Sterling were on hand Monday night in Chicago, where Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez made his season debut. The debut, of course, just happened to fall on the same day that Rodriguez was suspended 211 games (through the 2014 season) for his alleged role in the Biogenesis case.

At this point in Rodriguez’s career, there are very few people willing to defend him or even cheer for him, and that includes many Yankees fans. So it comes as no surprise — just ask Derek Jeter — that A-Rod was mercilessly booed Monday night when he came to plate. However, Waldman didn’t quite see it that way.

“There’s a lot of people standing and cheering, there really are,” Waldman said on the broadcast, with the chorus of U.S. Cellular Field boos singing in the background.

This is far from Waldman’s first on-air overreaction, though. She broke down on air when discussing Joe Torre a few years ago, and she also made a grand production out of the Yankees making a grand production about Roger Clemens‘ return to New York in 2007.
