David Ortiz Inspired by Bill Clinton, Name-Drops Former President in Describing Game 4 Speech

When the Red Sox were down and needed a boost, David Ortiz channeled the rhetorical fire of a speaker he admires and has heard talk many times.

Not Kevin Millar. Not Terry Francona. Not anyone related with sports at all, in fact — other than being a really big Arkansas Razorbacks fan.

Heading into the sixth inning in Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday, Ortiz called together his teammates in the visitor’s dugout at Busch Stadium for a motivational speech. While no one on the Red Sox would divulge exactly what was said, to a man they admitted that it helped light a fire that led to their 4-2 victory over the Cardinals that tied the series at 2-2.

The speech was all Ortiz, mostly, but with a little bit of another illustrious orator mixed in.

“I’m very emotional when I talk,” Ortiz said, according to WEEI.com. “Bill Clinton made a lot of money with his speeches, and he changes a lot of lives with his speeches. He’s a friend of mine, by the way.”

Well done, Ortiz, in one of the ultimate humblebrags of all time. There’s nothing like name-dropping a former president while describing your game-changing speech in a World Series you’re dominating.
