Islanders Unveil Stadium Series Jerseys, Substitute Isles Logo for ‘NY’ Crest (Photos)

The Islanders like to remind folks that the Rangers (and Sabres?) aren’t New York’s only hockey club, and they’ll be making that clear when they take on the Rangers at Yankee Stadium on Jan. 29.

On Tuesday, the Isles released their Stadium Series uniforms. They’ve done away with the team’s logo and replaced it with “NY” in big, shiny letters.

For years, the Long Island-based club has been playing second fiddle to its neighbors over the East River in Manhattan. Despite a passionate local fan base, the Isles rarely steal headlines or national respect from the Rangers. Perhaps these unis and a big win on Mr. Jeter’s pitch can make an empire statement.

“Obviously playing the Rangers in that game, there’s a lot of fight over who’s New York’s team and whatnot, and I think that’s still who we are,” captain John Tavaras told Newsday. “That New York with the hockey stick.”

“I think they’re really sharp,” he added. “We’ve seen in the past in a lot of outdoor games a kind of retro, heritage, old-school kinda look. But this is newer, more modern.”
