Le’Veon Bell is likely going to be immortalized on film for being at the center of a key play in Thursday night’s Ravens-Steelers game, but it probably won’t be for reasons of glory. Bell got himself in the middle of an instructional concussion video for years to come with the blow he took late in the fourth quarter.
Bell was charging up the middle with the end zone in sight when three Ravens defenders converged. Their massive hit caused Bell’s helmet to fly off, and he fell to the turf, his head snapping back in horrifying fashion.
Adding the proverbial insult to injury, Bell didn’t even get a touchdown on the play despite crossing the goal line, as NFL rules deem the play dead when a helmet comes off.
Bell left the game with an injury that, even if not ruled a concussion, is a serious head injury of some sort, showing how dangerous the sport can be for the most important part of players’ bodies.
