Auburn and Missouri will be fined $5,000 each for their infractions, and Ole Miss will be fined $25,000 because it’s the team’s second offense, according to CBSSports.com. Auburn is headed to the BCS national championship, thanks in part to a huge win over Alabama in the Iron Bowl. The fans’ reactions to the Tigers’ big win at home is what drew the ire of the SEC. Auburn fans stormed the field to celebrate after the dramatic win.
Missouri’s fans did the same after beating Texas A&M, and Ole Miss’ violation came after beating LSU in October.
“These were some of the most exciting and intriguing games of the college football season and we understand the exuberance of our fans in the celebration of their schools’ victories,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a release. “But these incidents pose a significant risk of injury and we must always make the health and safety of our student-athletes and fans the top priority.”
Mississippi State is also jumping on the postseason fines bandwagon because of the way fans cheer on their team. Bulldogs fans are known for ringing cowbells in the stands during home games, and are reminded by the team to “ring responsibly.” It turns out their ringing during the 2013 season was a bit too irresponsible as MSU is being fined $25,000 for defying the SEC’s Artificial Noisemaker Policy, according to For The Win.
