It’s been two years since Jeff Green underwent surgery to correct an aortic aneurysm and missed an entire season while he recovered. Since then, he’s become an inspiration for heart surgery patients everywhere, including on his own team, with he and “scar buddy” Chris Wilcox trading stories and advice last season as Celtics teammates.
Green reached out once again by visiting 10-year-old Spencer at Boston Children’s Hospital, and Bleacher Report captured the meeting on video. Although Spencer’s condition seems a little more serious than Green’s — Spencer has undergone six open-heart surgeries and his mother says that he needs a heart transplant — a visit from Green pepped up the young Celtics fan. Green also gained a new fan out of the visit.
Visits like this have become common for Green, but he said each one is special.
“You meet so many people who have gone through the surgery, it never leaves your mind,” Green said. “I call it a fraternity.”
“Spencer’s definitely in the fraternity.”
