Rangers Pitcher Derek Holland Injures Knee in ‘Freak Accident’ at Home, Likely Out Until Midseason

Texas Rangers left-hander Derek Holland will miss up to three months of the 2014 season after suffering an injury to his left knee.

According to ESPN Dallas’ Richard Durrett, Holland damaged his knee after falling on the stairs in his home earlier in the week. Durrett reports that Holland did not injure his ACL or MCL in the fall, but surgery was required to repair torn cartilage and clean out the knee.

“I am devastated by this injury,” Holland said in a statement provided by the Rangers. “It was a freak accident at home that resulted in a hard fall on my knee. As upsetting as this is, my goal is to begin rehab and get back on the mound as quickly as possible.”

The team expects the 27-year-old to be out until midseason.

Holland went 10-9 with a 3.42 ERA last season while leading the Rangers with 33 starts and pitching a career-high 213 innings. The left-hander was the only Ranger not to miss a start all season.
