Report: UMass to Hire Mark Whipple as Head Football Coach Replacing Charley Molnar

Mark Whipple is heading back to Umass.

Whipple, who was the head coach of the Minutemen from 1998-2003, will return as head coach after former head coach Charley Molnar was fired on Dec. 26 after two seasons, according to the Boston Herald.

Whipple has had stints in the NCAA and the NFL since previously coaching at UMass. He served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Miami, the quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns and the assistant offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Minutemen have struggled in their transition to the FBS over the last two years, posting 1-11 records in both seasons under Molnar.

Whipple previously compiled a 49-25 record and won a Div. 1-AA national championship in his first season in 1998.
