Revolution Acquire Fourth Overall Pick in MLS SuperDraft, Trade Defender Michael Parkhurst to Columbus

Thanks to a trade with the Columbus Crew, the New England Revolution now hold three top-20 selections in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

The Revolution dealt defender Michael Parkhurst to Columbus on Monday in exchange for the fourth overall pick in Thursday’s draft and allocation money.

“We certainly value Michael as a player having had him with us six seasons ago, but this trade provided us too much to pass up,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said in a statement. “This deal provides us with a significant amount of flexibility, both for our salary cap and our roster, and allows us to make additional moves to continue improving our roster.”

The Revs now hold the Nos. 4, 12 and 19 overall picks as well as one second-round pick and one third-rounder.

Parkhurst, a Cranston, R.I., native, was the MLS Rookie of the Year in 2005 and Defender of the Year in 2007. He played 115 games for the Revs from 2005 to 2008 before moving overseas to play in Denmark and Germany. Parkhurst had been playing for Bundesliga club Augsburg until his contract was dissolved by mutual consent Monday.
