German Biathlete Is First Competitor To Fail Winter Olympics Doping Test

The German Olympic Committee said Friday that one of its athletes failed a doping test at the 2014 Winter Olympics, according to Reuters.

The athlete has not been identified yet, but he or she competes in the biathlon, a German ski federation official said. Both of the athlete’s samples tested Thursday and Friday came back as positive for a stimulant, making it the first known positive test of the Sochi Games.

“We know who (it is), but we cannot give a name,” the federation’s Stefan Schwarzbach said. “As far as I know, it is a stimulant that you sometimes find in extra nutrition (nutritional supplements). So, no EPO or things like that.”

The athlete could be suspended, disqualified, have results erased or lose medals.

Germany has won 16 medals so far in Sochi, including eight golds.
