Bill BelichickAs New Englanders shovel out their cars and salt their stairs, it warms the heart to know Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are golfing in the sunshine and splendor of northern California.

Feb. 3-9 will mean nothing but golf for some A-list names competing in this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Each year celebrities, athletes and coaches of all backgrounds gather to compete in the pro-am. The idea for the tournament came from silver screen great Bing Crosby, who held the first event in 1947 on Pebble Beach, Cypress Point and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Monterey Peninsula Foundation has since installed Birdies for Charity as a way for nonprofits to raise money in conjunction with the tournament. The program has raised $2.2 million for local charities since its 2007 start.

The list of notable sports celebs paired with golf pros includes quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Alex Smith and Peyton Manning, tennis star Andy Roddick, NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky and former NFL head coach Herm Edwards.

Belichick and Brady are making a repeat appearance at Pebble Beach this year and will compete against each other in the same foursome. Brady is paired with Ricky Barnes, while Belichick will play alongside James Driscoll of Brookline, Mass.

The tournament uses a three-course rotation, and only the top 25 pro-am teams will qualify for the final round Sunday. The program will air on CBS.
