U.S. Ice Dancers End First Winter Olympics Run With Wardrobe Malfunction

A U.S. ice dancing duo ended their first Winter Olympics run Monday with an unforeseen wardrobe malfunction.

The sibling pair of Maia and Alex Shibutani were mid-lift during their routine when Maia’s skirt became hooked to Alex’s shirt.

“Things like this happen,” Alex said. “It was an accident. Thankfully, we were able to salvage it.”

The pair eventually worked their way out of the snag, but not before the mishap affected their final score. The Shibutanis finished in ninth place while Meryl Davis and Charlie White of Team USA took the gold.

Although their score wasn’t what they had hoped for, they said they still enjoyed their first Olympics.

“So while there’s this slightly sour feeling about what could have been and what could have been better, we’re at the Olympic Games,” said Alex.

Alex was born in Boston, Mass., and is an avid Boston sports fan. The team will compete in the 2014 World Figure Skating Competition in Saitama, Japan in March.
