The 18-year-old Vail, Colo., native posted times of 52.62 and 51.92 in her two runs in the final, edging silver medalist Marlies Schild of Austria by 0.56 seconds. Austria’s Kathrin Zettel took home the bronze.
Shiffrin, the defending world slalom champion, is competing in her first Olympics. Her medal gave the United States a total of 26 in Sochi, the most ever by the U.S. at an Olympics held outside of North America.
