Boston College Tops UMass Lowell To Advance To Frozen Four

Boston College advanced to its seventh Frozen Four appearance in the last 11 years with a 4-3 win over UMass Lowell in the NCAA Northeast Regional final Sunday night.

While the Eagles top line of Johnny Gaudreau, Bill Arnold and Kevin Hayes powered BC to a dominating 6-2 victory over Denver on Saturday, it was freshman defenseman Ian McCoshen who stepped up and became the unlikely hero against the River Hawks. The young blue-liner took a pass from sophomore Teddy Doherty near the top of the left circle and fired the puck past Connor Hellebuyck to break a 3-3 tie midway through the third period.

McCoshen’s tally with under nine minutes to play proved to be the game-winner as Boston College managed to hang on to the one-goal lead despite a barrage of shots from Lowell in the final minute.

Arnold, Hayes and Fitzgerald also chipped in goals for the Eagles, and Thatcher Demko made 29 saves on the day.

BC will face No. 1 seed Union College in the national semifinals April 10 in Philadelphia as the Eagles seek their fourth NCAA championship in seven seasons.
