The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to release Revis by Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, if they can’t trade the cornerback, ESPN.com reported Monday, citing league sources. Revis, and his $16 million per year contract, could be difficult for the Bucs to move.
The Bucs traded a 2013 first-round draft pick and a 2014 conditional fourth-round selection to the New York Jets for Revis last offseason. Revis would be overpaid to play in new Bucs head coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 system.
The New England Patriots have a need at cornerback, but Revis could be too expensive in a trade or through free agency.
None of Revis’ contract is guaranteed, so he would be released without penalty before Wednesday at 4 p.m.
