The SpeedFlex has landed.

A week after appearing in several college football locker rooms, Riddell’s newly-released SpeedFlex football helmet has made its way to the NFL, according to the Jacksonville Jaguars equipment staff.

The SpeedFlex’s most striking feature is a flexible hinge panel on the crown of the helmet that is designed to bend slightly when hit to absorb part of the impact of a blow to the head.

The helmet has yet to be used in game action, but many college and NFL teams have reportedly shown interest in testing it out this preseason.

We could see the SpeedFlex in use as early as May when NFL teams start Organized Team Activities, according to Thad Ide, Riddell’s senior vice president for research and development, who told ESPN’s “Uni Watch” that “most NFL teams have expressed interest and placed orders” for the helmet.
