aldon smithThe 2014 NFL season still is months away, but the San Francisco 49ers reportedly have already decided they do not want Aldon Smith playing with them in 2015.

The 49ers are not expected to pick up the 2015 fifth-year option on the former All-Pro outside linebacker, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

The team has until May 3 to decide on the option.

Smith was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport and charged with making a false bomb threat. The 24-year-old previously had been arrested on suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession in September 2013, and he also faces three felony weapons charges stemming from an incident at a house party in June 2012.

The 49ers do not plan to release Smith, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday, but he almost certainly will face discipline from the NFL, likely in the form of a suspension.

Smith missed five games last season to seek treatment for substance abuse following his September arrest.
