Yu Darvish Evokes Curt Schilling Memories With ‘Bloody Belt’ (Video)

One delivered a heroic performance on an injured ankle during a clutch playoff game to help his team defeat its biggest rival.

The circumstances were different but the images similar as Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish put his own twist on Curt Schilling’s “Bloody Sock” with the “Bloody Belt.”

In the seventh inning of his Wednesday night outing against the Seattle Mariners, Darvish re-opened a cut on his index finger and tried to stop the bleeding by wiping the blood all over the right belt loop of his clean white pants.

The 27-year-old ace’s plan worked, but not before he left a noticeable blood stain that brings to mind memories of Schilling’s bloody sock from nearly 10 years ago.

Before Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees, Schilling had sutures stitched to his right ankle in an attempt to repair a nagging injury. Despite the sutures rupturing midway through the game, the gritty right-hander lasted seven innings and allowed only one run in a 4-2 Red Sox win.
