Stephen Drew Goes 1-For-3 In Seven Innings As PawSox’s Shortstop (Video)

Stephen Drew is nearing his return to the big leagues.

Drew, who re-signed with the Boston Red Sox last week, made his first start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday night. He played seven innings at shortstop and batted third, going 1-for-3.

Drew had an infield single and also struck out twice in the Pawtucket Red Sox’s 3-0 victory over the Gwinnett Braves. He’s scheduled to be Pawtucket’s designated hitter Thursday night, barring any setbacks, the Boston Globe reported.

“It’s about coming in and getting games in,” Drew told the Globe. “That’s the total key right now. Where I am right now is trying to get my body as many reps as fast as I can so I can play nine innings every day.”

Drew, who went 3-for-8 in three games with Class-A Greenville over the holiday weekend, must be in the minors for at least 10 days because of option rules. That means the earliest he can join the Red Sox would be for their June 2 road game against the Cleveland Indians.
