Patriots Waive Tight End Kyle Auffray, Open Roster Spot Before Minicamp

Let the speculation begin. The New England Patriots opened a roster spot the day before mandatory minicamp begins.

The Patriots waived tight end Kyle Auffray on Monday, according to the NFL transaction wire. Auffray only lasted a week with the team after being signed last Monday.

Auffray played tight end and punter at New Hampshire after transferring from Mississippi State, where he was set to play quarterback. Auffray participated in three organized team activities with the Patriots.

The move leaves the Patriots with just five tight ends and 89 players on their 90-man roster, reopening speculation that the team could sign veteran free agents Jermichael Finley or Dustin Keller, both of whom have visited Gillette Stadium this offseason.
