There are some things you’re probably better off not doing. Comparing just about anything that happens in sports to an invasion is probably one of those things. Yet that’s just what Rick Reilly did on Friday.

The recently retired ESPN writer (he’ll still do on-air work) got a little carried away in describing what he saw from German golfer Martin Kaymer at the U.S. Open. Kaymer shot his second straight 65 to get to 10-under and held a large lead at the major golf tournament.

The natural comparison, in Reilly’s eyes at least, was Nazi Germany.

Uh, what?

Reilly clearly isn’t saying Kaymer is a Nazi or anything like that, of course. But it is a head-scratching comparison when you consider he could have went in, oh, just about any other direction. As of late Friday afternoon, Reilly had yet to tweet anything else — including any sort of apology.

That might change in the coming days.
