Boston College Routs UMass 30-7 To Open 2014 College Football Season

Boston College took a step toward building on last season’s success with a 30-7 win over in-state rival UMass at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

It was the college football season opener for both schools.

The Minutemen kept the score close early and trailed just 6-0 at halftime. The Eagles’ offense exploded for 24 points in the second half en route to an easy win.

Eagles quarterback Tyler Murphy was the star of the contest, throwing for 173 yards and one touchdown with one interception. The senior also led Boston College with 118 rushing yards and one TD.

The game was won at the line scrimmage as BC dominated UMass in the running game by picking up 338 yards on the ground. The Minutemen rushed for just 55 yards. This dominance in the run game allowed the Eagles to possess the ball for an astounding 42:11. They also executed well on third downs, going 9 of 17 while UMass went 3 of 11.

BC will host Pittsburgh on Friday at Alumni Stadium in its next game. UMass next plays Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Gillette.
