The life of a backup punter in the NFL is a difficult one. It’s never easy to make a team when you’re battling against a veteran, and it’s even tougher when you make a living on special teams.
Panthers backup punter Jordan Gay should know that better than anyone after his abysmal kick over the weekend.
Gay started his preseason on a rocky road when he missed an extra-point attempt against the Buffalo Bills during Carolina’s first game. He had a chance to redeem himself while punting in the second half of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. His punt, however, turned out even worse than the extra point.

The punt, rather miraculously, traveled just 8 yards from the line of scrimmage. It even made New York Giants (and former Jets) punter Steve Weatherford’s 12-yard kick against the New England Patriots in 2010 look good.
It’s safe to say it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gay found himself off Carolina’s roster by the end of the preseason.
