Jon Lester’s debut with the Oakland Athletics came on a very awkward day.
Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes were dealt to the A’s for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes before Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline, but before Cespedes was sent to Boston, Oakland planned to give away Cespedes T-shirts during Saturday’s game. The A’s had to make a decision on whether or not to distribute the already-printed shirts.
In the end, Oakland still held the promotion.
Lester won his first game with the A’s after allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings of work against the Kansas City Royals. Cespedes, on the East Coast, went 1-for-4 in his Red Sox debut at Fenway Park against the New York Yankees.
The A’s marketing department might want to wait until after the trade deadline to hold a T-shirt night for one of their players next time.
